About Dunsborough FC Dunsborough is the most recent team to join the South West Soccer Association, playing their first game in 2005. The game was against Dalyellup and Dunsborough went down by a solitary goal - and to make it worse - a penalty. In their first season, Dunsborough fielded a 4th division team and came runner up in the league and cup to arch rival - Harvey. From this beginning the club has grown from strength to strength. It was 2004 that Dunsborough's ball began rolling. Club president, Tony Plumb, began going down to the town oval with a soccerball and slowly a regular band of locals began to show up for a kick. This culminated in a number of friendly games against Perth teams and the momentum had begun. This motley crew of ex-players, young sons and the newly interested found a spirit and comraderie that was too good to let go to waste and recruiting started in earnest with the view to forming a Football team for Dunsborough. At the start of 2005, Dunsborough had enough for a full squad and the SWSA beckoned. Although often rusty and still learning to play as a team, Dunsborough quickly established itself as a worthy opponent and many team, expecting an easy ride against the newcomers quickly found out that a game against Dunsborough was anything but easy. If Dunsborough were not scoring goals, the defence were mercilessly closing down opposition attackers like experienced pros - quickly becoming the meanest defence in the league with many goalkeeping cleansheets and the foundations of an incredible backline. Club stalwarts, Goalkeeper Paul Andrews, Sweeper Wayne Perna, defenders David Shaunessy and Micky Finney formed a thick blue line which rarely leaked. Young local talent formed the midfield and frontlline under the experienced leadership of Plum, Colin 'Uncle' Pratt and inaugrial coach, Willie Hinde. Future clubs stars like Cid Richards, Steve Palmer and Jake and Clint Thompson stood out in this first year. In subsequent years. Dunsborough has grown as a club and experienced success. In 2006 they won the league and cup. Completing this double in their second year saw the club rushed into reserve division SWSA competion which forced the club to raise to a much higher standard or play. Again, existing teams who undersestimated Dunsborough ofen were on the receiving end of heavy defeats and sore bodies the next day. Success in second division (2 years) was enough for the SWSA and Dunsborough was promoted to Premier league and they finished 4th in their first year. In 2007 Dunsborough fielded their fist women's soccer side. Consisting of a couple of experienced players and a squad of young players, mostly high school students, the team showed all the determination and courage of the Dunsborough men. and quickly found their place in the top half of the CWSA Division Two ladder. What they lacked in experience they made up for in fitness and drive, upsetting many fancied opponents and going on to win the CWSA Open Cup against a vastly favoured Hay Park Division One team. In their second year they were promoted to Premier League. Dunsborough has benefited from a number of brilliant international players either living in Dunsborough on exchage (students) or on working holidays. Names, like Toby Holstrom (Sweeden), Kazu (Japan), Tomo (Japan), Luke Taylor (UK), Mick Doyle (UK), Nick Gumersall (UK), John Joyce (UK) and many others have found themselves as starring players in years gone by. This international flavour has only grown as players like Stewart Gidney (UK) and Graham Copeland (UK) set roots down in Dunsborough ands help raise the skills and determination of the team. Dunsborough FC has been listed on backpacker websites and it is not unusual to see a dozen international backpacker arrive at training to get a fix of the game they love. The club has a strong youth policy and able juniors are encouraged and nutured into adult level competition. With a vibrant and well strucutred junior club, the future looks bright for Dunsborough.
